Christmas Shopping in Port Moresby December 23, 2008

I’ve never had a Christmas shopping experience like this.  No pictures.

We road around our new city, Port Moresby today.

Everyday it breaks my heart to see the horrible poverty and needs of the people here, but today was hard.  Paul, me and the boys and a young lady from our church went to the “good store” in down town Boroko.   As we were walking in the store, I saw a little boy about 8 years old, barely dressed, dirty sitting in the mud.  I gasped and started praying, and as I turned my head I saw the street was covered with beggars, mostly children and elderly.  My heart deeply broke, and is hurt after witnessing that kind of poverty.

Then we drove further around the city (to get our barrings) we were trying to find a parking spot, and this little boy (10 or 11 yrs) rushed out and started ushering us in to a spot, it was too far away from where we needed to be so we kept driving.   I looked around and saw many boys running in the street ushering cars, boys as young as 7 or 8.  I asked the PNG girl we were with what they were doing, and she told me this is how they make money, ushering cars in and out of stalls.

These are all children that live in the surrounding settlements, if they have parents or line (family) they help support them or their parents drinking habits.

My heart aches just writing about this.  I thought about how these children spend days before Christmas.  Begging in the street or ushering cars, which by the way is very dangerous.

I’m praying for all the eyes I saw today, the hurt and pain.  I’m anxious to help bring love to the children of these streets.    My heart finds peace in my Lord, who came to earth to save them.

Hi there!! I just came across your blog and am really enjoying reading it. Do you have many medical teams come over for short term missions? I am a RN, and have a passion for missions work. I went to Cambodia and more recently to Haiti on short term medical teams. My email is tnmthomas@msn.com. Thank you for all you do and will do and God Bless you and your family.
